Samoens skiing France resort guide

in Samoens?

...It has something to offer all year round.

Samoëns is a beautiful village, listed 88th in the French National Office of Historic Monuments, and the only ski resort in France to be so listed. La Ferme des Mesanges is located in the hamlet of Vallons d'en Bas, in an extremely beautiful setting amid ancient French farmhouses and a small chapel. From this location, the farmhouse enjoys not only the mountains directly behind, but also views across the valley and sun late into the day.

The planning and architecture of Samoens has been carefully considered over the past few years. This expansion has allowed the village to welcome and cater for a wide range of guests, providing tourists with activities and past times that they can enjoy in a peaceful and preserved landscape. It really is completely unspoilt!

The impressive Grand Massif mountain range surrounds Samoëns, and the rich fertile countryside has established long-standing agricultural roots. "Reblochon" cheese is amongst some of the yield that is produced in this area - the cheese factory is open to visitors. The Giffre River runs through the valley and there are several lakes which provide the focal points for some of the numerous walks in the area. Samoens also boasts its own botanical gardens of alpine plants from all over the world as well as some stunningly beautiful architecture throughout the village.

The weekly food and textiles market (Wednesdays) is a very popular and busy occasion - visitors should ensure a small space in their agenda for a visit. There is also a smaller fruit, vegetable and flower market every morning in the town square.

Samoens is a village, not just a ski resort so is busy and vibrant all year round, with an impressive range of restaurants, cafes and bars catering to all tastes as well as a widely varying selection of shops and other amenities.

Samoëns has a lot to offer, for both families and individuals seeking adventure or alternatively just sheer relaxation.

There is something for everyone here - the possibilities are endless. Samoëns Chalets can provide activity-based vacations throughout the year, summer and winter.

Seeing the area:

Guided tours of the old village, in English for groups.

There are many tours and places of historical interest to visit, for example,"The Living Museum" (Clos Parchet), is an old farm where you can discover the history of families from Samoens. This includes tasting of local products.

The botanical garden "La Jaysinia" in the centre of Samoens village is a stunningly beautiful 3.5 acre alpine garden, created in 1906 with more than 8000 varieties of alpine plants from around the world. You can also find waterfalls, castle ruins from the XII century and a chapel from the XVIII century.

Walking and cycling - Samoens is well known for its outstanding and endless trails to suit all levels of ability. If you want to take these walks at your leisure rather than as part of a guided group, we can supply you with route maps. The main trails are all clearly signposted, taking you through breathtaking alpine scenery and not a vehicle in sight!

Activities are available year round. We can arrange these for you, either on a group or individual basis.

Mountain biking. Guided riding takes guests through some of the best Alpine singletrack riding available. Tens of kilometres of mountain bike trails with marker posts throughout the Giffre valley, including, of course, the one along the bank of the Giffre itself. Trails in the mountains are for those on top form, and for those of you who love descents, the ski lifts at Morillon will allow you to take the easy way up in the summer.

Bikes and helmets etc are available for hire. Guided outings are also available if you prefer some company.

Rafting and canyoning* The Giffre river runs through the Samoens valley and offers the perfect environment for rafting and canyoning. Under the guidance of a professional qualified instructor, you will negotiate competitive rivers without the need of any previous experience.
A really exhilarating experience for people who don't mind getting wet! And you'll want to do it again - guaranteed!!

*Equipment - A swimsuit and pair of trainers or other shoes that stay firmly in place when you go into the water is all that you would need to provide. You will be provided with: neoprene suits and socks (disinfected after each use). Helmets, harnesses, reins and abseiling devices.

Via ferrata. Fully guided and equipped by our instructor, via ferrata will give you the opportunity to climb in areas you couldn't otherwise reach without a certain degree of experience. The entire route is set up with safety equipment, steps, bridges and ropes. A great experience in beautiful surroundings - as long as you don't mind heights!

Paragliding. Never flown before? Let yourself be guided by a professional pilot to obtain your first taste of free flight. The tandem flight is also used for training flights to help beginners progress.

This really is just a taste of what's on offer in Samoens.
